Mockernut Hickory (Carya alba/tomentosa) leaves

Perhaps our most common and familiar hickory.

The hairy leaves usually have 7 leaflets and are very spicily fragrant.

Mockernut Hickory is common throughout North Carolina.

Until recently, Carya alba was more commonly known as Carya tomentosa (Lam. ex Poir.) Nuttall. There is still some dispute about the correct name.

The tight bark on mature trees has diamond-shaped intersecting ridges.
