American Goldfinch (Carduelis tristis)

American Goldfinch (Carduelis tristis)

American Goldfinch is one of our more common feeder birds. There's always a lot of action when goldfinches descend on your feeder. The bird at left was captured on the descent to the open port of the sunflower feeder (1/377 second exposure). The bird sitting on the middle port of the feeder is a male Purple Finch.

Duelling for position.

Especially fond of thistle seeds, goldfinches are more common in the Piedmont and Mountains than in the Coastal Plain.
