Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula)

Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula)

Baltimore Orioles nest in the Mountains and pass through the rest of North Carolina in the fall and spring, but are most often noticed by backyard birders when they appear at their suet feeders in winter. They are uncommon winter residents.

Adult male, Chapel Hill, NC 1/22/06.

Same individual, drinking sugar water from an "Oriole Fest" oriole feeder. The nearly-empty receptacles are for grape jelly -- very popular with orioles!
