Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) - Durham, NC

On 12/22/03 this immature Red-shouldered Hawk decided to take up residence in the Bio-Sci parking lot on the Duke University campus. It was not shy, not seeming to mind the nearby construction and allowed approach within about 10 feet. It hung around for several hours, favoring the roof of this van. It was not seen the following day.

Note the teardrop-shaped brown streaks on the breast, as well as the reddish "shoulder".
