Similar to Summer Azure (Celastrina neglecta), but averages much larger and found only in the mountains where its host plant, Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa), grows.

Appalachian Azure caterpillars feed on Black Cohosh flowers/flower buds and are tended by ants. The large, brown late instar caterpillars are quite easy to find by closely inspecting the inflorescences. The pale green earlier instars (at right) are much better camouflaged!
