Delaware Skipper (Anatrytone logan)

Delaware Skipper (Anatrytone logan)

One of our brightest skippers. The undersides are an unmarked rich, sometimes glowing, orange. Uncommon at best in NC; easier to find near the coast. Not likely to be confused with any other widespread species in the state, except perhaps an ultra-fresh male Sachem. Rarer butterflies that can be confused with Delaware include Arogos Skipper, Byssus Skipper, and Rare Skipper, which are found only near the coast.

This one was glowing in a spot of warm late afternoon sunshine in the Croatan National Forest, Craven Co., NC 8/24/03.
