Dingy Purplewing (Eunica monima)

Dingy Purplewing (Eunica monima)

Dingy Purplewing is rare in the US, where it is found only in southern parts of Florida, Texas, and Arizona. It inhabits the interiors of shady hammocks, but occasionally comes to the sunny edges, like the one photographed here.

Compare with the Florida Purplewing and Hammock Skipper.

Purplewings usually pose at odd angles on tree trunks and under leaves. This is the same butterfly, same pose, but photographed with the camera horizontal relative to the ground instead of relative to the butterfly.

There is a little splash of purple on the upperside of the wings.
