Very similar to Southern Broken-Dash, Northern Broken-Dash is less common in North Carolina and can be identified by the chocolate-brown color of fresh individuals.

However, with wear, the color of Southern Broken-Dash becomes darker brown, making worn individuals extremely difficult to separate from Northern Broken-Dash. Look for the intactness of the fringing as an indication of wear. The one at left is fresh.
