A relatively little-marked female - compare with a well-marked Black Swallowtail from North Carolina.

Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes)

Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes)
Santa Ana NWR, Hidalgo Co., TX 10/15/04.

This and Pipevine are the most common swallowtails in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Ornythion Swallowtail (Papilio ornythion)

Ornythion Swallowtail (Papilio ornythion), worn male
Chihuahua Woods RR tracks, Hidalgo Co., TX 10/18/04.

This rare butterfly resembles Giant Swallowtail, but is paler yellow, the bands on the forewing just touch at the tip (not crossing), and there's no yellow on the tails.

Ruby-spotted Swallowtail (Papilio anchisiades)
