Southern Toad (Bufo terrestris)

Southern Toad (Bufo terrestris)

An uncommonly seen toad of the Coastal Plain of North Carolina, replacing the similar American Toad, which is found in the Piedmont and Mountain regions. A field mark that helps to identify Southern Toad is the two cranial ridges between the eyes, which are a little more prominent than on similar species. They start at the front of the eye and extend to a bit behind the eye, ending with a slight J-shaped hook. Compare with the similar Fowler's Toad.
