Coastal Plain Serviceberry, a low rhizomatous shrub generally found in wet areas, is uncommon in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina.

Coastal Plain Serviceberry (Amelanchier obovalis)

Coastal Plain Serviceberry is very similar to Dwarf Serviceberry (Amelanchier spicata), which is also a low rhizomatous shrub, but found in drier areas. There is a difference between the two in the summit of the ovary, which is densely woolly-hairy in A. spicata, sparsely pubescent in A. obovalis.
