Red Hickory (Carya ovalis)

Red Hickory, also known as Sweet Pignut Hickory, is an uncommon to occasional medium-large tree — never common, but not particularly rare either.

Greensboro, NC 5/15/10.

Red Hickory (Carya ovalis)

Red Hickory is similar to Pignut Hickory (Carya glabra), but the leaves usually have 7 leaflets instead of 5, may be pubescent beneath instead of glabrous, and the petioles are red instead of green. Red Hickory was formerly lumped with Pignut Hickory by some authors, but they really are quite distinct.

Greensboro, NC 5/15/10.

Red Hickory (Carya ovalis)

Petiole bases are red. Buds are similar to those of the closely related Sand Hickory (C. pallida), but without golden-colored glands.

Greensboro, NC 5/15/10.
