Maritime Pine (Pinus pinaster)

This large pine from the western Mediterranean has been planted along the Outer Banks of North Carolina because of its salt-spray tolerance. Maritime Pine is an uncommon escape from cultivation in NC, not highly invasive at present.

It has thick needles with only two per fascicle (versus 3-4 for Loblolly); the serotinous (late-opening) cones have stiff, woody scales with a short, stout spike.

Nehalem Bay State Park, Tillamook Co., Oregon 8/6/06.
