Aphrodite Fritillary (Speyeria aphrodite)

Aphrodite Fritillary is about as common as the similar Great Spangled Fritillaries, but found only in the Mountain region of North Carolina. They are indeed as beautiful as the name implies.

As you can see, they're very fond of Butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa).

They are quite similar to Great Spangled, but have more intrusion of the dark ground color into the pale band near the outer edge of the hindwing below. The uppersides are even more similar, but Aprodites have an extra spot near the base of the forewing.
