Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele)

Great Spangled Frits are abundant in the mountains and common across the northern Piedmont of NC. This one is nectaring on Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca).

They are quite similar to the less common Aphrodite Fritillary of the mountains, but have a solid pale band near the edge of the hindwing, with no intrusion of the dark ground color. This one is nectaring on Parthenium integrifolium (Wild Quinine).

Very worn individual in Alleghany Co., NC 9/22/2001, with a broken left antenna and missing wing sections.
