Appalachian Brown is a local and uncommon largish satyr found in wet areas with sedges, mainly in the Mountains and Piedmont of North Carolina.

The striking undersides have many bright white-centered 'eyes' lining the edges of both fore- and hindwings.

Compare with the Northern-Pearly-eye, which occurs in the same habitat but is larger and has more contrasting pale and darker patterns on the undersides.
